Lovesac Sactional Couch 5-Year Review and Thoughts
This post is a follow-up to the sactional sofa review post I originally wrote back in 2019. Although that one has been updated several times, I felt like it would be helpful to do a 5-year review and share what we’ve experienced with our sactional sofa.
I’ve tried to answer questions that people have asked over the years but if there’s something you don’t find the answer to here feel free to leave a comment and ask me. I’ll answer as honestly and thoroughly as possible.
Today I’m sharing updated images of our real-life, very lived-in family room with our sactional. If you’re looking for a perfect home with everything meticulously placed then you might be disappointed. What you’ll see here is reality.
Doing our research
Way back in 2019 we bought a sofa…a huge, expensive, flexible, forever sofa. I’m usually not one to splurge on big ticket items like this, but we hated our old sofa and it was time for something better and bigger.
My husband (who used to be the frugal one, lol) is someone who enjoys researching products. Whatever he determines is the best option for us is usually what we end up going with because he’s honestly a little obsessive about getting the best products at the best price. I care about aesthetics more than he does so I get the final say on design. But if a product gets his approval, then I feel confident that it’s going to be very good.
Enter the Lovesac couch. I had never even heard of it, and honestly thought it was a little boring at first. So we looked at other sofas from Pottery Barn and local furniture companies. We also visited a Lovesac showroom to sit on a sactional and view all of the fabric choices. Ultimately we went with the Sactional couch because of how unique it is.
Purchasing the Lovesac
Although we visited a Lovesac showroom to test out the sactional couch, we still weren’t quite ready to buy on the day we were there. It’s a big investment and we needed to think it over a bit more. Their salespeople aren’t on commission so we didn’t feel guilty for not ordering through the store.
We ordered several free fabric swatches and then waited until there was a big sale (30% off, I think) and then placed our order. All of our pieces arrived in less than a week and we hired our youngest daughter and her boyfriend to help us assemble it all. More about the dreaded assembly further down in the post. NOTE – we’ve placed several orders over the past 5+ years and all of them have arrived in less than a week.
Our Sactional Set Up
We don’t live in a mansion or perfect home. We have a 1960’s home with a formal living room and also a large family room over the double garage that’s similar to a more modern “bonus room”. Our Lovesac couch is set up in the bonus room/family room or whatever you want to call it. This is the room that we spend the most time in so comfort and adaptability are very important to us when it comes to our furniture.
Here are the pieces we currently have:
- 6 regular sides
- 2 deep sides (the 2 middle seats)
- 7 seats with standard fill cushions including one that we converted to a rolling ottoman
- 2 regular side cushions, standard fill
- 2 deep side cushions, standard fill
- Our current fabric is Beachwood Rained Chenille
NOTE – All of the seats are sold with side cushions included. We don’t use all of ours and keep them stored inside the bottom of the seats. When the seats arrived, the blue rods were holding the larger seat cushions. You simply slide them out to remove the seat cushions and then assemble everything. Be sure to keep the rods in case you want to also store any extra cushions inside the seats. You could probably store other things in there or simply order storage seats if that’s a priority for you.
When our grown kids are home, we play games in this room. Look how cozy everyone is in this photo from Christmas 2023! The kids were so focused on playing their game that they had no idea I took this photo. (Note – the ottoman than my husband is sitting on is not attached to the rest of the sofa, hence the gap. Also, we’ve changed the covers since then.)
When we host holidays, we are in this room with many people sitting on this sectional.
We love the fact that we can have 8 or 9 people sitting comfortably on this couch and carry on a conversation. Or when it’s just me and my husband, we can both lie down and watch television (or nap, lol).
Home Theatre Room Atmosphere
Since our house doesn’t have a home theatre room, we appreciate the fact that several people can sit with us on our sactional couch and watch movies or football games.
The sactional doesn’t recline like movie theatre seats do, but you can put your feet up on ottomans and chaise arrangements and get the same experience without wasting space on a room that’s only good for movies or only seats a few people.
We have an oversized television, speakers in our ceiling, wall-mounted speakers, and speaker towers in the room to create a fabulous surround-sound experience.
NOTE – I recommend adding StealthTech to your sactional if you also love being surrounded by the sounds of what you’re watching and want a movie theatre experience.
What We Love Most About Our Lovesac Sactional Couch
Overall, we’ve been very satisfied with our sactional sofa and would recommend it to anyone who wants a comfortable, flexible sofa. My sister likes it so much that she bought one too. Here’s what we like the most about it:
1. Flexibility
Although there are other modular sofas that are flexible, there’s still nothing quite like this sofa. The possibilities are extensive. If you’ve visited the Lovesac site, then you’ve probably seen the videos showing the various arrangements, and there are many.
We’ve arranged our Sactional in various configurations including:
- The large u-shape configuration that it’s currently in
- Two smaller sofas
- A sofa and chair
- A guest bed
See all of the sizes and configuration options here: Sactionals Configurations Guide
Rearranging it isn’t too difficult and I’ve done it by myself before. I’m 56 and in average condition. If I can do it, so can anyone who doesn’t have mobility issues. Allow 20 – 30 minutes if you’re completely rearranging it.
2. Ability to Replace Covers for a New Look
After 5 years we replaced our original covers with the Beachwood Rained Chenille a few months ago. Although we still like the Polylinen Seashell, we were ready for a new look.
Ironically, they don’t LOOK that much different at first glance. They’re both light and neutral, but the newer ones are softer and a bit darker. They’re also more pet resistant which is critical since we have two cats. And by the way, the kitties also love the new fabric.
NOTE – I use this pet hair remover once a week to clean the cat hair off our cushions. It works really well on almost any surface and has nearly 200,000 positive reviews.
The fact that we could replace the covers without buying a brand new sofa was awesome. We still love the sofa and although replacing the covers wasn’t cheap, it gave us the updated look that we wanted without having to shop for something completely new. I bought the new covers when they had a special offer for 50% off replacement covers for sactionals that were more than 4 years old.
3. Washable Covers
We haven’t washed our new covers yet, but we washed our old ones multiple times and had no problems at all. They didn’t shrink or get misshaped and went right back on the cushions.
Also, the only ones we ever had to wash were the seat cushions. The sides, bases, and backs never had to be washed but we could have washed them as well if we had needed to.
NOTE – We use this large solid maple folding drying rack to air dry the covers. It has over 2,700 positive reviews.
4. Accessories, Options, and Upgrades
When we bought our Sactional there were only straight and rolled sides. Now they offer angled sides as well and it’s always great to have options. I wasn’t sure that I’d like the straight sides at first. But I really do like the clean lines of the sofa.
There are mulitple options that you can choose for your sactional setup. Here are some of them:
- Side style – standard (straight), rolled, and angled styles are available.
- Back style – straight and angled are available for the backs.
- Configuration – you can choose from popular configurations or customize it to your needs.
- Cover fabric – choose from over 200 fabrics with free samples available.
- Cushion fill – you can choose from standard foam for firmer cushions or Lovesoft for a softer cushion. We have the standard foam and it has held up very well for 5+ years. The softer ones have a more lived-in look and will need to be re-shaped regularly. Be aware of that if you choose those.
- Seat style – choose from standard, storage, or stealthtech seats, as well as optional charging/power hubs.
- Accessories – add tables, coasters, and drink holders for the ultimate setup.
Last year we added a coaster and table. The specific designs we have are no longer available, but you can see the current options here => Lovesac accessories. They’re specifically designed for the sides and cushions and fit like a glove. (FYI, you can find more accessories made to fit the Sactional on etsy for a lower price. You can also buy models including deep seats so you can play around with the configuration options.)
We added these caster wheels from Amazon to one of the seats to create a rolling ottoman. It took less than 5 minutes to change the wooden feet to the wheels and they roll nicely on our carpet. The wheels can lock if you need that capability. This simple change made us love the ottoman so much more because it’s so easy to move now.
5. Pet-Friendly Fabric Options
Our first covers were polylinen seashell and were gorgeous. They aren’t labeled as pet-friendly and I occasionally would need to snip little threads where the cats had pulled them out. The newer ones in Beachwood Rained Chenille are much more forgiving and I haven’t noticed any pulls after several months of owning them.
Pet owners can feel reassured knowing that there are a couple of fabrics that are extremely durable and pet-friendly. And of course, these fabrics can be washed on gentle cycle. The recommended fabrics if you own pets are:
- Corded Velvet
- Chenille

6. Adaptability
We started out in 2019 with 6 seats and 6 sides and that was a great size for us. But after a few years we added two deep sides (more about that below) and another seat that we use as an ottoman.
The fact that this sofa can grow with us as needed was something that was very important to us. And knowing that if we someday downsize and won’t be stuck with odd arms or chaise pieces from traditional sectionals is also very nice. Converting it into a smaller sofa is super simple and we’ve done it a couple of times already.
Things We Don’t Love About Our Lovesac Sactional Couch
1. Assembly
Assembling the sactional is definitely the worst thing about it. It took four of us a couple of hours to put it all together. It’s not super difficult, but you might want to consider wearing nitrile coated gloves to protect your hands.
I wrote an in-depth post several 5 years ago detailing the delivery, assembly, and many other things. You can read all about it here: Our Lovesac Sactional – Is It Worth The Splurge
2. Price
Yes, it’s expensive. You can certainly get a sectional couch for a lot less. We’re very frugal, believe in good value, and felt like it would be able to serve us for many years to come. We’ve had other expensive sofas in the past that we outgrew or got tired of quicker than they wore out. But this one is so adaptable that we felt confident that we could use it for a long time.
They run sales often with up to 30% off. And if you’re a first responder, healthcare worker, teacher, or military personnel you can save an extra 5% here: HEROES DISCOUNT

3. Cushions Shifting
I’ve noticed that when we have a chaise arrangement, the cushions shift slightly after a while. It’s not too bad and my husband doesn’t even notice it. Here’s an example:
How to Fix: The cushions attach to the seat base with a strong velcro and can be easily adjusted. Make sure the velcro is clean doesn’t have any debris in it that could cause the cushions to not be as secure as they should be. And rotate them regularly to help avoid any issues with shifting.
4. Shifting Covers
Similar to the shifting cushions, we occasionally notice that the covers on the seat cushions have shifted slightly. But we are on this couch A LOT and I think this would probably happen with any sofa.
How to Fix: First of all, make sure the covers are on the seat cushions correctly. If they’ve shifted, just remove them and put them back on where the seams of the covers are lined up perfectly with the edges of the cushions. Also, the chaise arrangement without any end/side/arm piece will make this more prevalent. Sides will prevent the cushions and covers from shifting, in our experience.
When I was taking photos for this post I noticed that some of my covers had shifted slightly. It only took a few minutes of adjusting them to make them look much better. Here’s what it looked like before straightening them:
And this is what a few minutes of easy work did for them:
FAQ’s About Our Lovesac Couch
Over the past 5 years I’ve gotten a lot of questions about our sactional that you might also be wondering about. Here are several of them.
No. We haven’t needed to contact customer service in the 5+ years we’ve owned our sactional. It’s just me and my husband in the house now, but we spend a lot of time on this sofa.
Well…I fall asleep on our almost every night while watching television. So yes, it is. My husband is a night owl and sometimes ends up sleeping on it also. Although it’s obviously not as comfortable as a bed, it’s pretty darn comfy.
(Yes, someone actually asked me this) If you rotate the seats to where they’re deeper than they are wide then you can cuddle on on it. My husband and I can snuggle on it using the deep seats (see below for more about deep seats). If you’re both small you might be able to snuggle on it with the standard depth by removing the back cushions. I’d say it depends on your size.
We have the standard cushion fill because we prefer a firmer cushion that doesn’t lose its shape or need constant fluffing.
No, they don’t slouch. I think the standard fill cushions hold their shape very well.
Line up the seams first, then slowly pull down one end an inch or so and then the other until it’s all the way on. When we’ve added or changed them, having a second person has been helpful, especially with the side covers. I’d recommend watching their video and wearing nitrile coated gloves to protect your hands and get a better grip on the covers.
No we don’t. It wasn’t an option when we purchased ours in 2019 or we probably would have since the hubs loves things like that. And we already have a home theatre system set up so we didn’t feel like we needed to add them. (I sourced our speakers earlier in the post)
No. If we were buying a new set, we would probably get one or two storage seats and the rest would be standard seats. They’re a little more expensive and we wouldn’t need more than two, honestly. You can store extra cushions in the standard seats, as mentioned above.
Lovesoft – This is a unique down alternative that has a similar feel to the down cushions. Very soft and doesn’t require as much fluffing as genuine down.
Standard Fill – The standard cushion fill is the least expensive and most firm. Because of its firmness it holds its shape the best and doesn’t need to be fluffed. But again, it’s firm. We have this one and love it. The last couch we owned had down cushions and we hated them. Yes, they were soft, but they always looked messy and flat.
Down – These are a blend of white goose down and feathers with synthetic fibers. They’re very soft and many people love them.
The most questions I’ve received have been about deep sides. They’re the sides of the sactional that are needed when the seats are turned 90 degrees when they’re set up so that they can be deeper instead of wider.
Simply put, standard sides = wider seats.
Deep sides = deeper seats.
Yes, it’s confusing.
The standard sides are designed to be used when the seats are set up so they’re wider than they are deep.
We have two deep sides that are in the center of our sactional,. The gray highlighted sides in the first illustration below are deep sides and the others are standard. This is the configuration that we’re currently using.
The second illustration has all standard sides and the center seats aren’t as deep as the corner ones.
Here’s another comparison of our deep vs standard sides on our sofa.
Do We Have Any Regrets About Our Lovesac Couch?
There’s not anything that we actually regret, but we might have done things a little differently if we ordered then knowing what we do now.
1. Fabric Choice
If we could go back and change anything, it would probably be our original fabric choice. (Don’t tell my husband I said that 😁). Although I really love the light and fresh look of the seashell polylinen fabric, it’s just really hard to keep white-ish fabrics looking clean. It washed well, but with pets and everyday use it wasn’t very practical. To be fair, that’s not really a sactional issue but is instead more of a color choice.
Someday I’ll tell you about the white tile and grout in our master bathroom remodel. Don’t ever do it is all I’ll say for now.
2. Seat Depth
We also would have probably ordered some of the deep seats with our original order. I don’t know if they weren’t available when we ordered or if we just didn’t know about them, but they made a huge difference for us when we finally did get them a couple of years ago.
Overall, we’ve been very happy with our sactional and get compliments on it all the time. Our grown kids love it when they come home and we can all sit on it and watch movies or play games on the television. And they’ve been known to lie down on it and nap as well.
Is a Lovesac Couch Right For You?
Although we love this sofa, it may not be right for everyone. Here are a few things to think about if you’re considering buying a sactional.
- Room Size – Before buying a sactional (or any furniture), I recommend finding out the measurements and placing removeable tape or cardboard that’s cut to the furniture size on the floor where the furniture will sit. Make sure it’s the right size before you order it. You can order only the pieces you need but you still want to make sure you can walk around them.
- Assembly – As I stated earlier, you have to add the covers to all of the pieces and then assemble them. If you have mobility issues and nobody to help, then this might not be the right choice for you. You can do it alone but it will take you a while.
- Price – It’s expensive. But it is unique due to the fact that it’s so adaptable to your future needs. They do offer financing but I never recommend buying something you can’t really afford. I also don’t recommend paying full price for it and you can see their current sales at the bottom of this page – Current Lovesac Offers.
