White Dove from Benjamin Moore

Who knew how difficult it could be deciding on a white paint color, right? There are literally hundreds of options with various undertones, so narrowing it down can be frustrating and confusing.

Today we’re talking about the ever-popular White Dove from Benjamin Moore including undertones, coordinating colors, where to use it and more and hopefully it will help with your search for the right white paint color for your home.

What color is White Dove?

White Dove OC-17 is a soft creamy neutral white that’s been a best seller for Benjamin Moore for at least a couple of decades. Also known as PM-19 (PM indicates that it used to a be pre-mixed color), it has all the qualities you need for a versatile and neutral nearly white paint color.

It’s the color I’ve sold and recommended the most for trim and cabinets for the past 30 years and have used it throughout my own home.

Is Benjamin Moore White Dove a warm or cool white?

It leans slightly warm with subtle creamy undertones. But it’s a white that can be used with both cool and warm colors.

What undertones does White Dove have?

With a mix of gray and oxide yellow colorants, White Dove has a tiny hint of soft creamy undertones. But it’s definitely not yellow.

The LRV, or light reflective value of White Dove is 85.38. On a scale of 0 to 100 with 100 being the lightest, 85 is considered to be very light. The lightest white from Benjamin Moore, Chantilly Lace, has an LRV of 90.

Does White Dove look yellow?

No, it doesn’t look yellow. The only time White Dove looks even slightly yellow-ish is when it’s compared to colors with cool or gray undertones.

And even then it’s more of a creamy appearance than actually yellow. Here’s a good example of that with a side-by-side comparison to Wickham Gray.

Does White Dove look gray?

Similarly, White Dove could appear slightly gray when compared to colors with yellow undertones. Here’s a comparison with Linen White, a classic creamy white paint color.

Why is White Dove so popular?

Benjamin Moore White Dove is extremely popular because if it’s warmth and versatility. It has a nice white appearance but isn’t cold or stark.

And it works with almost any color you put with it. It’s truly the little black dress of white paint colors.

Contrasting and Best Trim Colors for White Dove

Many people, including myself, use White Dove as a trim color with White Dove walls. Using a higher sheen on the trim like a satin or semi gloss and an eggshell finish on the wall will give a nice subtle contrast and ensure that the trim is washable.

A popular trend that’s everywhere is White Dove walls with contrasting trim. It’s been around for years but has really gained steam recently.

Swiss Coffee is another classic, popular white from Benjamin Moore’s best selling colors. It’s very similar to White Dove and has mostly neutral undertones. It’s slightly darker but has a similar warmth to it.

The cleanest white from Benjamin Moore is Chantilly Lace. It’s basically devoid of any undertones and you can see here how White Dove looks a little warmer and slightly darker than this popular white.

Another of the top white paint colors from Benjamin Moore is Simply White. It’s lighter and slightly warmer than White Dove.

White Dove vs Super White

Super White is lighter and slightly cooler than White Dove. It’s more of a stark clean white and gives a crisp contrast.

OC-17 White Dove vs Sherwin Williams Alabaster

Possibly the closest color to White Dove is Sherwin Williams Alabaster. It has an LRV of 82 and is the slightest bit darker than White Dove. They have very similar undertones.

White Dove vs Sherwin Williams Pure White

Pure White is slightly warmer than White Dove. It’s more of a crisp, clean white and has an LRV of 84.

Another very similar color is Greek Villa. It’s just a tiny bit darker with an LRV of 84 and warmer or more beige than White Dove.

BM White Dove vs Sherwin Williams Snowbound

Snowbound is the tiniest bit darker with an LRV of 83 and has warmer undertones than White Dove.

Now that we’ve talked about the nuts and bolts of White Dove and you’ve seen how it compares to other popular white paint colors, let’s look at it in some real rooms.

White Dove Living Rooms

Our own living room is painted with White Dove and this is a recent image. Like most whites, colors can reflect onto White Dove and give it an appearance of having various undertones. The colors from my area rug are reflecting on the wall and giving it a warm hue.

Here’s an older picture with a different furniture arrangement and some subtle fall decorating ideas. We have lots of large trees in the back yard, and when I shot this picture they were covered with lush green leaves so there’s a bit of a green cast seen here.

In our laundry room I added an accent wall of paintable brick wallpaper and painted with with White Dove. The other walls are painted with Quiet Moments.

Benjamin Moore White Dove Craft Room

One of the rooms in our basement is my craft room. I painted the paneling walls with White Dove and also painted the laminate counter top and updated the pulls and knobs on the cabinets for a fresh look a few years ago. It’s still a basement room with only a small window, but the light color keeps it from feeling so dark. I also painted the floor to look like an area rug using a stencil and floor paint.

White Dove walls with gray Trim

This pretty mudroom from McGee & co has White Dove walls that make the space look so fresh and clean. Trim and door color is 50% Chelsea Gray and cabinet color is Narragansett Green.

Here’s a similar color combination used in an open concept kitchen and dining area. The Steep Cliff Gray cabinets look great with the White Dove walls and the warm wood and leather tones.

Sheila at Maison de Cinq gave her bedroom a refresh and painted the walls with White Dove. The soft blues and pale neutrals look beautiful with the White Dove walls.
